DFI Reflection - Day 1 - Core Business

Kia ora Koutou,

The Manaiakalani trust was established by the inequity of the decile divide in 2006 in a radius of 6km, which brought about this kaupapa of where the Malaikalani started its journey. I was surprised to see that schools were higher decile schools across the water, and the lower decile schools were concentrated in a small area of Auckland.

The importance of approaching the co-matua to guide this change and the naming of this cluster of communities was the start of an important process. The significance of naming Malaikalani after the constellations of the stars which Polynesians followed to navigate to Aotearoa. This is a story of passionate, innovative people collaborating to form a strong foundation of partnerships for our young people, placing the learners at the centre.

I have learnt to improve my confidence in Google Suite tools using Docs, Drive and Groups. Although I am familiar with these tools, I have learnt some new skills that will enable me to be more efficient. Our school uses Hapara Workspace. In the 12 years of my teaching career, I have never used a better tool conducive to both teachers and learners.

Knowing how to use a tool to solve a problem is what we aim to achieve for our students. Building this capability into our own professional skills will empower us to gain confidence and building the capacity for other teachers to grow and learn by sharing these skills within our educational environments.

I developed a poster doc for all the clubs happening in school. I shared this with my colleagues so they could update a link to join the club.

Poster - Clubs at Papakura High School

I created this document and learnt the following:

  • Titles
  • Headings can be changed and edited then updated in one go on Google Doc's
  • Links can be shared to parts of the document

The Eyes on the Text - reading mileage was great to see how effective speech to text can improve writing accuracy using speech.

I have been able to Learn, Create and Share. This has helped me to feel comfortable and share this with my bubble. Although the lessons were full-on, I enjoyed the flipped and blended learning at our first DFI day 1. I am now looking forward to next weeks session.

Nga Mihi,

Satchet

  1. Kia ora Satchet,
Thank you for sharing your reflection on the day. I always find it really interesting seeing what has connected with our participants. I really like your clubs doc - I can see that it would be really useful to have that information in one place for students. Are there any particular new skills that you think will be really beneficial for you?

    1. Thank you for your comments Vicki. I have picked some new skills that are a lot of different smaller aspects of Google tools. I am looking forward to learning more!

  2. Kia ora Satchet, thanks for taking the time to put this comprehensive reflection together from the first week of DFI. I'm sure that our group will benefit from the experiences that you bring. We do cover Hāpara Workspaces in greater depth later in the term, but it would be great to get your input when it comes to supporting our group members with this when the time comes. Looking forward to working with you over the course of the 9 weeks. Ngā mihi

  4. Kia ora Satchet, I really enjoyed looking around your blog layout and reading your reflection. The poster you made for clubs at your school is very cool and I love how you have included links to sign up and to the film instagram club which makes it really engaging. I'm thinking of trying to design something similar for my school so thanks for the inspiration!
